1957 Jaguar XK150 3.4 FHC
PNR223 is an early example of the type and unusual in featuring automatic transmission, gears being selected by way of a dashboard mounted slide control. Supplied new on the 14th of December 1957 to its first owner, and with subsequent invoices showing maintenance of the car into the 1960’s, the car was purchased by its second owner Mr Brian Lewis in 1974 according to his son, who still owns the car to this day.
At some point in the 1990’s, Brian decided it was time to lavish some time and money on the car and she was intrusted to a Birkenhead based specialist for a major rebuild of which we have many photographs, including a full bare metal repaint.
In 2013 the car passed to Brian’s son, the current owner who has subsequently continued to cherish and look after the car, evidenced by invoices for service and maintenance up until a few years ago.
Stored there after the car has come to CMC to be recommissioned and brought to a MOT pass standard in preparation for sale. Some 30 years on from its restoration, the car now has a great patina of use and is in sound solid condition. The interior trim is in great order and the car runs and drives very well indeed.
This car would make a tremendous entry into the world of XK motoring for any enthusiast. Either as a driving, usable enjoyable car that could be perfected over time or as a great base for more immediate upgrading, with only three owners from new, two of whom were father and son, this is a great opportunity.
Part of our preparation work for this car has included an overhaul of the braking system, including new calliper cylinders and pistons and a new master cylinder. The brakes now feel firm and responsive and after an engine tune the car drives very well. We have also overhauled the differential which now operates quietly. A number of other repairs have been carried out to recommission the car which has now passed its MOT test and our inspection of the car’s engine revealed healthy compression figures.
Don’t for one moment think that this car will perform less well than a similar manual transmission car either. The three speed auto performs well, making for very relaxed and easy classic motoring. In addition the Jaguar “speed hold” system allows the driver to lock out third gear just as a modern “Sports” mode does on the car’s decedents, allowing for spirited driving without the automatic selection of higher ratios getting in the way of the fun. And of course for those looking for easy classic motoring, with its automatic transmission, this car provides just that.
A really lovely time warp car at a competitive price which will appeal to anyone who takes a test drive.
