bringatrailer.com/listing/1953-jaguar-xk120-drop-head-coupe-5/_source=dailymail&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=2020-03-21

Auction description:

Lot #29536

Seller: cascadia

Location: Portland, Oregon

Chassis: S677562

69k Miles Shown, TMU

XK150 3.4-Liter Inline-Six

4-Speed Manual Gearbox

Non-Running Project

Spare Engine Block and Parts

Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate

Private Party or Dealer: Dealer

This 1953 Jaguar XK120 drophead coupe is a rolling project originally distributed by Max Hoffman Motors of New York, New York and is one of 1,767 XK120 drophead coupe examples produced. A restoration project reportedly was begun by the previous owner, who had the car for 37 years in Oregon. A non-original 3.4L inline-six has been retained in the chassis and is mated to a numbers-matching four-speed manual gearbox. Recently acquired by the selling dealer in a largely disassembled state. This XK120 project is now offered with a Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate, a spare engine block, a spare roadster rear body section, an assortment of parts, and a clean Oregon title.

This XK120 was originally finished in British Racing Green and presently wears a faded white and primed finish on most of the included body panels.

Factory 16″ knock-off wire wheels wear a black-painted finish on one side and a silver finish on the other. Aged examples of Atlas, BFGoodrich, Dunlop, and Michelin tires are mounted.

The interior has been removed, and the forward and rear body sections have been separated. An additional rear body section from an XK120 roadster is included in the sale, as well as two sets of rear fenders. Rust is noted along the rocker reinforcements and other area of the body.

A wooden dash and instrument cluster housing Smiths gauges as well as two leather-clad seats and panels are included. The five-digit odometer indicates 69k miles.

The included 3.4-liter DOHC inline-six wears stamping V1767-8 on the engine block and the cylinder head, and it is reported to have been sourced from an XK150. The four-speed manual gearbox wears stamping JL 17416, which matches the serial number listed on the Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate.

A spare “W”-stamped block from a different XK120 is included in the sale along with a set of two sets of used pistons and a pair of crankshafts.

An assortment of used and new parts accompany the car as shown in photos. The soft top assembly is included. Absent items noted by the seller include the flywheel, generator, steering linkage, and distributor.

The Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate lists the factory colors and component numbers as well as initial distribution through Max Hoffman of New York City.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
