I bought this from Keith Malkin brother of rally driver Colin around 1970.
It was first owned and rallied by Frank Grounds of Sutton Coalfield, Warkwickshire.
LOE 3. chassis 660337. engine W2507/7 registered 6th February 1951. green/green.
Grounds had C type head + other mods.
He told me that there had been 12 steel roadsters relesed in December 1950 and this car was the first of a 2nd batch released in January 1951 so it was the 13th to be sold in UK.
He knew Willian Lyons and that enabled him to get the car so early.
A much rallied car with many International events. I have photos, & original v5.
He rallied it in roadster form and then later he acquired a fixed head roof panel and that was grafted ontop of the roadster body together with doors made up to appear as the factory type fixed head.
He gave me to understand he did this before a fixed head was actually available and his soul intention was to be competative in the fixed head or saloon classes. I have more notes about this.
I found I couldn't sell it with the roof so cut it off and sold it as a roadster again, in1980's.
The roof went to a guy in Cornwall with a lot of spares in 1990's.

Photos show:-
LOE 3 the day I decided to remove the roof panel in about 1980.
some of the lead loading I had just removed at the base of the screen pillar.
I had spoken with Frank Grounds & his thoughts were that he had better memories of it as a roadster.
Frank has told me LOE was part of the 1952 Team prize winners of 1953 & Corgi produced a box set of the 3 cars, Grounds, Appleyard
and Grant Norton.
With the FHC roof he won the '54 RAC but was disqualified because the car did not meet the correct regulations for a FHC being a conversion.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
