Car still at above seller in San Diego. Additional information:
Original engine, running gear and is Silver with Dark blue leather, hartz Top, Toneau, and original side curtains. I have driven the car (2) times on the Colorado Grand and it performed perfect at speeds up to 115 MPH. It also ran the Cal Mille Miglia. The car also was shown Councours Jaguar competion at JCCA and won first in class. It is truly one of the best and most original early Alloy Jags. Chassis # 670061. $400K.

The car offered here, chassis number 670061, was the 61st Alloy Roadster built, and it is one of one hundred eight-four delivered with left-hand drive. It is believed to have been originally owned by Roger Thomas, of Connecticut, and it was later converted to right-hand drive, in keeping with its sporting British origins, and refinished in beautiful silver with blue leather, as it appears today.

Mr. Swimmer acquired the Jaguar around 2005, from his friend Don Williams, of the Blackhawk Collection. Mr. Williams related that he purchased this car as part of a package of cars from England, where he believed it to have remained for some time with its then-owner. When Mr. Swimmer acquired the car, it did not have rear-wheel spats, nor did it run particularly well. It was immediately sent to JCNA senior judge and restorer Jack Rabell, who added the spats, rebuilt the carburetors, went through the ignition system and the electronics, sorted the ignition, put a new coil and points in the car, and generally ensured that it would run perfectly.

This has been one of the longest-term residents of Mr. Swimmer's collection, as well as his most driven car. He reported that it ran beautifully up to 115 mph, the highest speed to which he was willing to take it. It was well known as an excellent competitor during its two runs in the Colorado Grand and its completion of the California Mille; together, these runs represent some 3,000 miles of high-performance touring. Throughout its rally career, it was intermittently shown, and in 2007, at the local San Diego Concours, the XK120 was inspected by JCNA judges and restorers Jack Rabell and Tom Krefetz. They both deemed the car to be very correct and authentic, with matching numbers; however, there were some minor details that were not entirely precise. Subsequently, the car was sent back to Mr. Rabell's workshop to have those minor details fixed, such as having the proper type hoses and hose clamps added; the correct-fitting interior added; minor paint work conducted on the rear deck lid, which was fixed where the top was not closing properly; and a light mechanical service performed. Mr. Rabell said that this car now runs and drives incredibly well, and it always performs as it should.

Importantly, the vehicle retains its original tool set, as well as a set of full disc wheel covers and rear fender spats. The wheels are shod in Verdestain radial tires, improving the car's road manners for the long rallies that Mr. Swimmer so enjoyed. Furthermore, should the next owner decide to convert this example back to its original LHD configuration, this is a very simple conversion, and estimates to do this by a marque specialists are below $5,000. With the value of most low-production European sports classics soaring, these cars represent incredible value and collectability, and they certainly tick all of the boxes: open, two-seat, European sports car, stunning good looks, and very limited production numbers.

Chuck Swimmer loved automobiles, few more so than this regularly exercised alloy XK120, which is being offered here to a new owner, who will, undoubtedly, enjoy it as he did.

Told by the post-war Attlee government to 'export or die', the British motor industry responded valiantly, none more so than Jaguar Cars, soon to become the UK's biggest US-dollar earner thanks in no small measure to the success of its XK120 sports car. Ironically, the XK120's creation had only come about because delays in the gestation of the MkVII saloon had forced Jaguar to find an alternative method of bringing its new XK six-cylinder engine to public attention. Conceived and constructed in but a few months, the XK120 debuted at the 1948 Earls Court Motor Show where the stunning looking roadster caused a sensation.

Conceived as a low-volume model, the XK120 proved considerably more popular than expected, the resulting demand for what was then the world's fastest production car taking Jaguar by surprise. It was immediately obvious that the ash-framed alloy coachwork – hand built in the best vintage tradition - would have to go and the XK120 was re-engineered in steel after 240 cars had been completed.

Its stunning appearance notwithstanding, the XK120 was conventional enough beneath the skin, being built on a separate chassis - in essence a shortened and narrowed MkV frame - featuring independent front suspension by means of wishbones and torsion bars, a live rear axle, and drum brakes all round. The fact that the major mechanical components were already in existence meant that development centred on the body. The work of Jaguar boss William Lyons himself, and one of the most beautiful shapes ever to grace an automobile, the latter was conceived as a coachbuilt aluminium structure for the simple reason that Jaguar expected to sell no more than 200 XK120s in the first year!

The car's heart was, of course, the fabulous XK engine. Conceived in wartime and intended for Jaguar's post-war range-topping saloon, the 3.4-litre six embodied the best of modern design, boasting twin overhead camshafts running in an aluminium-alloy cylinder head, seven main bearings, and a maximum output of 160bhp. When installed in the lightweight XK120, the result was a car with a phenomenal power-to-weight ratio and blistering performance. The '120' referred to the car's top speed, and Jaguar lost no time in demonstrating that this was no idle boast. Any doubts about the claim's veracity were swiftly banished when in May 1949, on the Jabbeke to Aeltre autoroute in Belgium, a standard X120 achieved a top speed of 126.4mph with hood and side screens erected, and 132.6mph minus its weather protection and equipped with an under-tray!

The XK120 set new standards of comfort, roadholding and performance for British sports cars and, in keeping with the Jaguar tradition, there was nothing to touch it at the price. Coupé and drophead coupé versions followed, and for customers who found the standard car too slow, there was the Special Equipment package which boosted power from the stock 160 to 180bhp. With either engine and regardless of the type of bodywork, the XK120 was a genuine 120mph car capable of sustained high-speed cruising. From launch until the end of production in the autumn of 1954 the XK120's popularity never slackened, especially in overseas markets that took over 85 percent of total output. In the end a little over 12,000 XK120s were built, making every one of the 240 alloy-bodied roadsters something very special indeed.

The 61st alloy-bodied XK120 roadster built, '670061' is one of 184 delivered with left-hand drive. Believed owned originally by one Roger Thomas of Connecticut, the XK was later converted to right-hand drive and refinished in silver with blue leather interior, its current livery.

The immediately preceding owner, American collector Charles 'Chuck' Swimmer, acquired the Jaguar circa 2005 from his friend, Don Williams. Founder of the celebrated Blackhawk Collection, Mr Williams had purchased the car from its long-term owner in the UK. When acquired, it lacked rear-wheel spats and did not run well, so was immediately despatched to Jaguar Clubs of North America senior judge and restorer Jack Rabell, who added the spats and carried out extensive re-commissioning to ensure that the car would run properly.

One of his collection's earliest acquisitions, the XK120 was also Chuck Swimmer's most frequently used car. He drove it in the Colorado Grand on two occasions and also completed the California Mille, a combined total of some 3,000 miles of high-speed touring. Chuck Swimmer also showed the XK120 on occasions, and at the San Diego Concours in 2007 it was inspected by the JCNA's Jack Rabell and Tom Krefetz. Only some minor details were found to detract from this otherwise very correct and authentic car, and these shortcomings were subsequently put right in Jack Rabell's workshop.

Following Chuck Swimmer's death in December 2013, cars from his San Diego Collection were offered for sale at auction in the USA, which was where this XK120 was purchased by Chris Evans. It has since been registered in the UK and is offered with a V5C registration document and Jaguar Heritage Certificate. Importantly, '670061' retains its original tool kit and comes with a set of wheel discs and rear spats. Equally at home on the concours lawn, racetrack or Grand Tour, this early alloy-bodied XK120 roadster is without doubt one of the more significant Jaguars to come to the market in recent years.

Our car, chassis number 670061 is one of but 242 alluminium bodied XK 120's, and was delivered new via Hoffmans of New York to US specification and finished in Cream with Biscuit & Red interior

As evidenced on the FIVA / HVA Identity Card (number 044709) she was first supplied to Roger Thomas in Conneticut, who had her converted back to RHD

Resplendant now in Silver with blue mohair weather equipment and matching dark blue hides inside she is almost spotless - both underneath as well as on top

She is matching numbers and carries her Jaguar Heritage certificate number 38950

Previously owned by the famed Blackhawk Collection - we have had vehicles from here before and they are always of the very highest quality - Don Williams kept it with his many wonderful cars within the collection, having no less than Jack Rabell attend to the XK's every need

Mr Rabell not just a most competent engineer he was also so well respected for his knowledge of these glorious cars that he was a senior Judge for the panel of the Jaguar Clubs of North America - well I suppose if anyone was to know his stuff, then he should and it shows that 00061, was in good hands

Williams' good chum, Charles (Chuck) Swimmer managed to wrestle the XK from him in 2005

Chuck was also a serious collector and intrepid rally participant too

From all of his collection this XK was to be become the most frequently used and he entered and used her twice in the epic Colorado Grand and also the California Mille

Like Williams' he also ensured that the XK was not just kept in perfect mechanical condition, he also was particularly fussy about how she looked and to that end entered her in the San Diego Concours - the judging panel included Jack Rabell as well as Tom Krefetz

Notwithstanding Jack's association with the XK a couple of minor items were picked up and Chuck, after the event, immediately returned her to Rabell for updating - thus ensuring she could (and still can by the way) meet the very highest of scrutiny

The original tool kit is included, as is a complete set of mohair weather equipment to include side screens

To us, these really are the Holy Grail of post was road going Jaguar's and number 00061 is as good as it gets from our perspective.

The car went through extensive restoration to a very high standard. This jaguar was displayed at the 50th anniversary of Le Mans and Monthlery Jaguar museum. It spent most of its life in the USA before being imported to the uk, November 2014. We purchased the car in 2016 and it's been kept in our private collection ever since.
