This 1951 Jaguar XK120 roadster underwent a repaint and an interior retrim as part of a refurbishment completed in the late 1990s. The car is finished in green with a black convertible top over tan leather upholstery and is powered by a 3.4-liter inline-six that breaths through dual SU carburetors. Shifting is through a four-speed manual transmission, and further equipment includes a split front windshield, Koni front shocks, drum brakes, 16″ steel wheels, and rear wheel spats. Acquired by the current owner in 2018, this XK120 roadster is now offered on dealer consignment in Saint Louis, Missouri, by hymanltd —a BaT Local Partner—with a Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate and a clean South Carolina title.
The XK120 was introduced in 1948 with handmade alloy bodywork, but was switched to steel panels in 1950 to facilitate wider-scale production in response to public interest.
The steel body of this example left the factory finished in Suede Green and was repainted as part of the aforementioned refurbishment. It wears a black convertible top accompanied by a split front windshield and rear wheel spats as well as chrome front bumpers and rear bumperettes.
The 16″ steel wheels are finished in body color and wear bright hubcaps and trim rings. They are mounted with BFGoodrich Silvertown whitewall tires. The car was factory equipped with an independent front suspension and has been fitted with Koni front shocks, while semi-elliptical rear leaf springs paired with lever-arm shock absorbers are retained out back. Stopping power is provided by four-wheel drums.
The re-trimmed cabin features bucket seats with tan leather upholstery complemented by a color-coordinated dash, door panels, and carpets. Amenities include a dashboard-mounted rearview mirror, a passenger-side grab handle, and door map pockets. The selling dealer tells us that the installed cigar lighter is inoperative.
The four-spoke steering wheel has a cracked rim and fronts Smiths instrumentation including a 140-mph speedometer and a reverse-sweep 6k-rpm tachometer with an inoperative inset clock along with auxiliary gauges. The five-digit odometer shows 20k miles.
The 3.4-liter DOHC inline-six was factory equipped with dual SU carburetors and rated at 160 horsepower when new.
Power is routed to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission. The selling dealer notes rust on various underside components.
The Production Record Trace certificate from the Jaguar Heritage Trust shows a build date of September 19, 1951, plus factory colors and identification numbers and delivery through Hoffman in New York.
The current South Carolina title lists the engine number as the VIN.
