Ebay item 6/14/06
cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll
Current bid $25,450 reserve not met, 11 bids, 8 days left in auction.

Sellers description:
I bought this car in 1990 from Aurie Myers, a research engineer for IBM, who bought it new from Hempstead Auto Company on October 4, 1952. The original purchase price was $4,039 and Aurie got $1,839 for his trade-in, a 1951 Ford. The odometer (27,877 miles) pretty much tells the story.

Except for thinning chrome on a few parts (grille, grab-handle & side-window knobs) and oxidation of aluminum/pot metal parts (valve covers & carburetors) the car is essentially new. Most of the chrome parts have been rechromed or replaced. The drivetrain was completely rebuilt (including hardened valve guides) and both the body & frame (which required very little restoration) were stripped and finished. The car was originally Jaguar bronze (not one of Sir William’s better efforts) and is now Olde English White. The Biscuit and Tan interior is new and duplicates the original. Hard-to-get parts (heater core, batteries & "US legal” windshield glasses) have been replaced while impossible-to-get parts (clock, oil level gauge & windshield chrome) have been refurbished.

The key to this car is that I got it in original configuration (right down to painted bolt heads and slotted screws) and restored it that way. It is a whole lot more original than any concours car I’ve seen and any variances probably come from the parts bin in Coventry. An interested purchaser could detail the car to a show-stopper but I’d like for my buyer to drive it – a lot!

I’ve toyed with the idea of driving the car to my buyer but the math gets way too complicated. If a West Coast buyer wants to talk about this, I’ll sure listen. Otherwise, whoever buys the car will have to do the 500 mile run-in.

Car returns to ebay 6/25/06
cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Jaguar-Roadster-Almost-New-1952-Roadster_W0QQitemZ300000 ...
Opening bid $40,000 reserve not met, no bids yet, 7 days left in auction.

Additional description added since last auciton;
1: I have been asked about originality of components. All components are original and all numbers match the Identification Plate. Motor No. W5685-8, Chassis No. 672712, Body No. F-4718, Gearbox No. JL-12171. These numbers come from my notes and were confirmed by Jaguar. The car was built August 20, 1952.

2. I have been asked about accidents and rust. This car hasn't even been dinged. A couple of holes were patched where Aurie added a wing mirror and an antenna. There was some rust in the "post" holding the striker plate for the driver's door; this metal was replaced. All metal was inspected after the body was removed from the chassis and no other rust was found. The box frame measured to be true and was then flushed, sandblasted and painted.

3. I have been asked about missing parts. I do not have the tool roll and my mechanic is looking for the jack. I have the original factory manual but no owner's manual. One of the gaiters (passenger side?) protecting the rear leaf springs died a natural death and will be missed.

Note 4: I have been asked about the top, side curtains, etc. The top is new, canvas and has a plastic rear window. I have two sets of side curtains. One set is the original with solid windows and a "reach-through" section; the other is an older replacement set with sliding windows. There is no tonneau.

5: I have been asked about the extent of mechanical restoration. The entire drivetrain was rebuilt. Every seal and bearing from the front of the motor to the outboard end of the rear wheels was replaced. The entire wiring harness is new as are all critical components in the brake system. The fuel system was fully rebuilt.

Previous auction ended at $40,000 reserve not met after 17 bids.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
