Above seller's description:
Jaguar XK140 OTS RHD 1956 - Genuine Racing History - for sale
800065DN
G6764-8

Despatched 7th February, 1956 to Brysons, Sydney (one on only 3 XK140 RHD OTS cars delivered to Australia) and sold to AG Adams on 12 April, 1956. It was raced in period by Bernie Maudsley at the AGP (Australian Grand Prix) meeting at Lowood in June 1960, with wire wheels fitted.

The next owner was David Martin, said to have been a bassoon player in the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, who sold the car to Ray McGhie of Brisbane in 1969. Robert Gill of Toowong purchased it in 1971, in reasonable road going shade, shortly thereafter moving to Sydney where he sold it to Ian Cummins in May 1979.

800065DN was then sold to Jim Byrne in 1980, whom owned the car until late 2014. Mr Byrne custodian for 34 years finally opted to take 800065DN back to bare metal and carry out a nut and bolt restoration that cost more than A$210k ( all recipes on file) and over 2 years to complete. The present owner took ownership in July 2014 on completion of the restoration and has brought the car back with him to London.

This represents a very rare opportunity to acquire not only a very rare original RHD XK140 roadster ( one of only 73 cars produced worldwide) but one of very few XK's with genuine period race history. Thus making the car eligible for all of the prestigious touring events.

Car now offered at:
www.djsmail.co.uk/sales-cars/product/1956JaguarXK140RoadsterOTS/

Sellers description:
This original RHD car left the factory in February 1956 to be delivered to Bryson's in Sydney Australia and was first registered to A.G Adams on 12th April 1956. By 1960 it had come into the hands of Bernie Maudsley who raced it that year in the Australian Grand Prix meeting at Lowood Queensland! Next owned by David Martin said to be a bassoon player with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra who then sold it to Ray McGhie of Brisbane in 1969. Robert Gill of Towong bought it in 1971 and entered it in the Jaguar National Rally in Cowra in 1972. He also wrote an article about the car in the magazine 'Sports Car World' in June 1974. It eventually came into the hands of Jim Byrne of Sydney in 1980 who became the custodian for the next 34 years! A full restoration was started in 2009 and eventually finished in 2013 with over $200,000 AUS being spent!!! The current owner purchased the car upon completion of the restoration and decided to return it to the UK
The car is offered fully restored and in superb condition. Only 74 examples of a RHD Roadster were ever made and only 3 were exported to Australia, along with this cars sporting history, making this a very rare car indeed!

Footnotes

One of 73 right-hand drive XK140 roadsters made, this example was supplied via Jaguar dealer Bryson in Sydney, Australia The car was delivered finished in Pearl Grey with blue interior and black soft-top, and was equipped with overdrive transmission. '800065' is one of only three right-hand drive XK140 roadsters supplied new to Australia.

In April 1956 the Jaguar was sold to its first owner, to Air Commodore Alfred Adams of Edgecliff, Sydney. Born in Surrey, England in 1909, Air Commodore Adams enjoyed a long and distinguished career in the Royal Air Force, which included commanding three separate bomber and fighter bases during WW2. In 1955 he was posted to Australia on an exchange basis, and took command of the Royal Australian Air Force's Land-Air Warfare School at Williamtown near Newcastle, New South Wales. He died in Sydney in 1969.

It is not known how long Air Commodore Adams kept the XK, but in June 1960 it showed up at the Australian Grand Prix meeting at Lowood where it was raced by Bernie Maudsley. Documentation on file records the names of subsequent owners in Australia, one of whom, Rob Gill, wrote an article about his XK140 for Sports Car World magazine (June 1974 edition, copy on file). In 1980 the Jaguar was acquired by previous owner Jim Byrne, who kept it for 34 years. Eventually, in 2009, he decided to carry out a full 'last nut and bolt' restoration, on the completion of which the car was bought by the current vendor (in July 2014) and brought back to the UK.
Offered with a Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate, V5C document, and sundry restoration invoices, '800065DN' represents a wonderful opportunity to acquire a rare right-hand drive XK140 roadster with in-period race history, eligible for a wide variety of the most prestigious historic motoring events.

I am the owner of S800066DN, the next car produced after Bernies. Bernie was a member of JDC Queensland being the owner of an E Type FHC. Sadly Bernie passed away on 23 September 2019. He was born on 17 February 1933.

It was amazing that two of the rarest of XK140s - RHD Rroadsters - were owned by four resident JDC members from Brisbane , Queensland, being myself for S800066DN and for 800065DN Bernie, Ray McGee and Rob Gill. 800065DN was the first XK I ever laid eyes while it was owned by Rob.

I knew Bernie well and actually left my car in his care while I travelled overseas in 1975.

I'm told he died after a battle with cancer over a number of years.

Bernie was a quietly spoken man who was well like by all who met him. He was a member of JDC in the early days when the club first formed and we were fewer in numbers.

He later became an active member of the Riley Club being the owner of a Riley RMC Roadster.

The significance of his 140 roadster is that it was one of the few RHD cars worldwide with a racing history. He told me the XK was it its best on the long straight at Lowood where at 90mph he'd leave the Porsches of the day "like they were standing still!"

Peter Fast
