This 1955 Jaguar XK140 SE Drophead Coupe was acquired in 2019 as a non-running project out of California by the seller, who moved it to Ohio. In June 2019 the engine was started using an external fuel source. Refinished in red over a gray and black interior, the car is equipped with its numbers-matching 3.4L inline-six as well as dual carburetors, a four-speed manual transmission, overdrive, 16″ wire wheels, a wooden dashboard, and a convertible-top frame. This XK140 DHC project requires cosmetic and mechanical attention before it can be driven and is now offered with a Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate, removed parts, and a clean Ohio title in the seller’s name.

The car was delivered new in Pearl Grey according to the JHT certificate, and at some point it was refinished in red. The driver-side front fender has been sprayed in primer around the wheel well, and stone chips, scratches, and other blemishes are evident in the paintwork and trim. The black soft top is in place but torn. The majority of the photos were taken in 2019, with additional images taken in July 2021; the car been stored since 2019 in the same location according to the seller.

Gray 16″ wire wheels utilize two-ear knockoffs with Jaguar script and are mounted with a mix of 6.00-16 Michelin X and Sears Allstate Guardsman tires. The wheels, brakes, and suspension require attention.

The car received a black interior from the factory, and it now features a split bench seat with gray leather upholstery. The carpeting, door panels, and much of the trim is in place, and the seller notes rust in the trunk area.

A four-spoke steering wheel frames a wooden dashboard that shows signs of age and wear. Smiths instrumentation consists of a 140-mph speedometer, a reverse-sweep tachometer with a 5,500-rpm redline and an inset clock, and auxiliary gauges. The five-digit odometer shows 98k miles, and the seller has not driven the car. True mileage is unknown.

The 3.4-liter inline-six is paired with a four-speed manual transmission, which was equipped with overdrive from the factory. Work at Growler Restoration of Cleveland, Ohio in June 2019 included partially cleaning the carburetors, removing the distributor and cleaning its shaft, and replacing the cap, rotor, and spark plugs. The ignition system did not work properly and was hot-wired at that time, with the included receipt indicating that the engine “fired, ran, [and] accelerated.” Oil pressure read over 50 psi, and a compression test at that time recorded results between 60 and 125 psi in the individual cylinders.

The engine stamping reads G2631-8 and matches the cylinder-head stamping. These numbers also match the stamping recorded on the data plate affixed in the engine bay as well as the number shown on the JHT certificate. A matching body tag is also pictured in the gallery.

The factory fuel system has been disconnected, and additional photos of the underside are presented in the gallery.

The removed parts shown above will be included with the car.

The Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate indicates a build date of June 14, 1955 as well as the car’s serial numbers, equipment, color scheme, and initial delivery to Los Angeles, California.

Spam prevention question (must be answered):
The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
