Car was at acution in '98

www.practicalclassics.co.uk/auctionlot/by-id/1493205256/

Auction description:

Lot 097: Jaguar XK120M M (1954)

Classic Cars, Christies (16th August 1998) Pebble Beach

Lot Number 097

Hammer Price (inc premium) $47150

Condition rating 2

Chassis number S677919

Engine number W9564-8S

Red with black leather interior

Engine: six cylinder in-line, double overhead camshaft, 3,422cc, c.160bhp at 5,250rpm; Gearbox: 4-speed manual; Suspension: front - independent with double wishbones and longitudinal torsion bars, rear - live axle, semi-elliptic leaf springs; Brakes: four wheel hydraulic drums. Left hand drive.

This model is the rarest of all XK120's. The production run, replaced by the XK140 in 1954, was short lived and only 1,767 were built. Bodywork is the standard two seater, two door convertible style with vee screen, integral projecting trunk, opening quarter windows, split front bumper bars and vertical rear overriders, superb walnut-veneered fascia panel and cappings with an easy-fold, fully lined hood.

The car offered here is one of the original Special Equipment Jaguar XK120's available after 1951. The special features comprise: chrome wire wheels; high lift cams; a lightened flywheel; larger valves; dual exhaust and Lucas fog lamps. It also comes with a tool roll and jack. This Jaguar was purchased in 1990 by the present owner and the car has lived in Beverly Hills since this time. This attractive XK is representative of a slightly older restoration. The current owner who enjoys driving his cars rather than showing them has carried out routine running maintenance. Recent work includes an oil change, carburettor tune and attention to the brakes. On a recent test drive this Jaguar performed extremely well. This special equipment Jaguar is quite resplendant in its red livery with chrome wire wheels and whitewall tires.

Sellers description:
OVER $75.000.00 SPENT ON A FRAME OFF RESTORATION NOTHING WAS LEFT UNDUNE EVERY BOLT AND NUT RELPACED, I CAN WRITE 5 PAGES OF THE WORK THAT WAS DONE THIS IS A 99.9 CAR Purchase this vehicle and you will feel like the original owner did - very proud to say you own it. To have a finish like this, it is obvious that this vehicle has been garaged. When you feel the transmission shift on this vehicle, you would think it was a brand new auto. The engine in this vehicle runs smooth as silk. There are no electrical problems with this vehicle whatsoever. This vehicle has no known defects - it is super. This extra clean exterior makes this used auto look new. The interior of this vehicle is in absolutely mint condition and still has the new vehicle smell. You should feel good with at least 75% of tire wear left on this set of rubber. California Emissions Compliant

Good set of matching numbers now shown. In spite of this being repeatedly shown as 1954 it was in fact built in August 1953

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
