Oddly enough, this data plate appeared on an "SS100" sold for $286,00 USD on Aug. 14th 2010 at Sports & Classics of Monterey .

No mention of being a replica, has a post-war, MKIV or MKV 3 1/2 Litre engine, porcelained exh. manifolds, post-war CWW etc.

Interesting : The plate is shown on a Red background which matches the SS 100 but the auctioneer does clearly state the chassis number for this car is 18081 so perhaps the 120 FHC plate is not meant to deceive

Thanks to Terry McGrath we now believe this data plate sits there bevause this car was once equipped with this XK120 engine, gearbox and final drive, and is believed to still have the gearbox and final drive (differential) but the engine is now a MKV engine. Quote (from Jag-lovers.org): "18081 made $286.000 UK rego BWX243 repro ID plate there is nothing to
suggest 18081 was duplicate but certainly at one point had an XK120 motor
fitted along with XK120 gearbox and diff and this probably accounts for the
ID plated from ''S678115'' that was fitted from an XK120 DHC whilst I did
not check it has been stated the 120 diff and gearbox were still fitted.
The car had a MKV engine fitted ie a postwar item but had scored very highly
in JCNA concours."

Indeed, oddly enough the SS100 (VIN 18081) returns to auction with the same data plate 8/12

This time however the SS100's data plate is provided along with the one for this car. The original engine # appears to be 252620.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
