The black and white photo appears in Bernard Viart's book "Jaguar XK--la competition sur route dans les annees 1950" at page 205. It is at the Brescia control of the 1956 Mille Miglia and is being driven by Georges Guyot. Viart states that this particular car was, according to the great Andrew Whyte, prepared by the factory to take part in the 1955 Rallye des Alpes but the event was cancelled following the Le Mans tragedy. It was said that two other cars were also prepared, chassis 033 and 034.

S800035 (or a lookalike#) survives wearing its 1956 event number 245 as a modern Mille Miglia entrant, which in 2011 still had the French 1157BF59 plates, although for the 2014 event had Dutch plates AM-95-17 (crewed by John and Rutger Houtkamp with 2014 event number 359). See imcdb entry for an appearance in 2014 event footage on Jay Leno's Garage (Web Series) and links to the recent info at www.imcdb.org/vehicle.php .

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
