This 1956 Jaguar XK140 SE is a matching-numbers roadster that was purchased new in Highland Park, Illinois and sold to its second owner in 1975. The car is said to have been disassembled in 1992 for a restoration that included body and frame work and a repaint in the original cream color. The work was partially completed before the car was moved to Florida in 2005, where it was stored until purchased in 2012 by the seller, who is reportedly the third owner. The refurbishment was subsequently finished with rebuilds of the numbers-matching 3.4-liter inline-six and close-ratio 4-speed manual gearbox along with a refurbished interior, replated brightwork, replacement convertible top, new wheels and tires, fresh cooling and fuel system parts, a stainless exhaust, and more. This XK140 was put back on the road in late 2015 and is offered with recent records, a Jaguar Heritage certificate, a factory manual and tools, a new tonneau cover, and a clear Florida title in the seller's name.

The body is said to have received a repaint in its original cream while with the second owner before the car was moved into storage unassembled. The car retains Special Edition features including a dual exhaust, twin adjustable fog lamps, and a windscreen washer system that was reportedly replaced with correct Trico parts.

New 60-spoke wire wheels with knock-offs hubs were installed and mounted with Coker 600R16 tires. The original wire wheels have been repainted and are included in the sale. The bumpers, grille, windscreen frame, and other trim pieces are said to have been replated. A new convertible top and tonneau cover from Bassett's match the factory black color listed on the Heritage Certificate. Side curtains are included in the sale, but have not been restored.

The interior features new leather upholstery in original black, and new seat frames and slides are said to have been installed. A wood-rim steering wheel has been fitted in place of the original, which was refinished and is included in the sale.

According to the seller, the instruments have been rebuilt by Nisonger, including the quartz clock. The odometer shows 35 miles, with total mileage unknown. The seller has driven the car about 150 miles since the work was completed in late 2015.

The numbers-matching 3.4L XK DOHC inline-six is said to have been rebuilt with new pistons and updated front and rear crankshaft seals. The C-type cylinder head, an option included in the Special Edition package and indicated by the S suffix in the engine stamping, was rebuilt by Coventry West in Lithonia, Georgia. The 4-speed manual close-ratio gearbox is also said to have been rebuilt, and the ignition has been converted to a Pertronix electronic system.

Engine number G8938-8S can be seen stamped into the block above and matches the Heritage Certificate. Cylinder head and gearbox stampings are featured in the gallery below, with the CR suffix on the latter indicating a close-ratio unit.

Service records and parts receipts document the work done during the seller's ownership, which is also said to have included installation of a new radiator, water pump, SU fuel pump, fuel tank, fuel and brake lines, stainless steel exhaust, wiring harness, porcelainized exhaust manifold, and gear reduction starter (original included).

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
