This 1956 Jaguar XK140 MC is a LHD fixed-head coupe that was originally distributed through Charles Hornburg, Inc. of Los Angeles, California in fall 1955. The 3.4L twin-cam inline-six retains its matching-numbers C-type head, and the 4-speed manual gearbox equipped with a Laycock de Normanville overdrive. A repaint in non-original maroon was performed in the early 1960s, and a bare-metal repaint in the current color was commissioned by the seller shortly after his purchase in 2011. LED tail/brake lights and seat belts were also added, and a summer 2017 service included a new stainless steel exhaust system, new rear leaf springs and bushings, re-lined rear brakes, fresh coolant and brake fluid, an oil change, and new tires. The seller has added 3,300 miles during his ownership, and the car has received several awards at British Columbia shows, including a first place in the Driven Category at the Heritage Classic JCNA Concours. This XK140 is now offered with service records back to 1996, a Jaguar Heritage Certificate, a spare wiring harness, new lock cylinders, and a British Columbia registration.

The MC model (called the SE in other markets and on the included documentation from Jaguar) features driving lights, wire wheels, windshield washers, bigger torsion bars, and dual exhaust. Originally Pastel Blue over red leather, this example was repainted in a metal-flake maroon many years ago. It was stripped to bare metal in 2012 and refinished in the current red at Sterling Autobody of Ladner, British Columbia. Pictures showing work in progress can be viewed below. Body seals and weatherstripping were also replaced, and the bumpers and overriders were re-chromed. The seller notes that the fog lights are not functioning and a rear window trim strip is missing.

The body consists of steel fenders and doors along with an aluminum bonnet and deck lid. LED tail/brake lights and a new brake light switch were added by the seller. Chrome 16″ wire knock-off wheels were factory equipment on the MC, and correct replacements were sourced in 2007 but are mounted with older spinners. New 185-width Michelin X tires were installed in August 2017.

The car has been shown at a number of shows and won the following awards:

2012 Minter Garden Concours - First Place 1950s Import Class
Heritage Classic JCNA Concours - 2nd place in the Driven Category
2013 Van Dusen ABFM - First place XK Jaguar Class
Crescent Beach Concours - First place Imported Car Class
2014 Van Dusen ABFM - First place XK Jaguar Class
Two Lions Pub Car Show - People's Choice Award
Heritage Classic JCNA Concours - First place in the Driven Category
2015 Haugen Park Show - First place in the Closed Vehicle (coupes) Class
2017 Fort Langley St. George's Day Show - Mayor's Choice Award (the only award at this show)
Van Dusen ABFM - 2nd place XK Jaguar Category
Cultus Lake Show - First place in the Closed Vehicle (coupes) Class

New horns and and a horn wiring kit were installed by the seller, and replacement door lock cylinders are included in the sale. Some crackling and aging can be seen in the wood varnish, and a Motorola volumetric radio is equipped. Smiths gauges are said to be operational, though the speedometer needle bounces a bit. The odometer shows 36,722 miles, and the electronic overdrive is engaged with a toggle switch to the left of the steering wheel.

Originally red, the interior was refinished in black during previous ownership and was removed during the repaint. Rear seat cushions are equipped, and lap belts were added by the seller. A new wiring harness and spare fuse boxes are included in the sale.

The spare wheel was recently refinished in silver and is housed with a jack and grease gun beneath a flat subfloor.

The 3.4L twin-cam inline-six is equipped with a C-type head, which increased output to 210 horsepower. The 4-speed manual gearbox features a Laycock de Normanville overdrive, which was rebuilt in 2012. The SU H8 carburetors have also been rebuilt. Other work performed during the seller's ownership included a new starter solenoid, replacement of transmission seals and gaskets, new spark plugs and ignition components, a new fuel pump, and a new battery. A coolant flush, inspection, and oil service were performed in June 2017. The seller notes that the engine drips some oil.

The cylinder head shows stamping G4271-8S, which corresponds to the engine number identified in the Jaguar Heritage Certificate. Body number J4868 is identified in the certificate and matches the data plate pictured in the gallery below.

Ball joints were replaced and the steering rack rebuilt shortly after the seller's purchase, and the U-joints, wheel cylinders, and front shocks were also replaced at that time. In summer 2017, a new stainless exhaust was installed along with rear leaf springs, U-bolts, and shackles. The brake drums were also re-lined and refinished, and the braking system was bled and flushed.

A certificate of authenticity from the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust records the original drivetrain and body numbers, factory equipment, and US import. Though built and imported in 1955, the car was sold to the original owner in 1956 and is titled from that year.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
