    Lot number88

    Hammer value £20,000

    Description Jaguar XK150 SE FHC

    Registration 150 GPC

    Year 1958

    Colour Red

    Engine size 3,781 cc

    Chassis No. S824435DN

First registered in May 1958, this particular XK150 began life as a right-hand drive 3.4-litre SE fixed-head in Cornish Grey. In 1975 it was fitted with the triple-carb 3.8-litre ‘S’ spec engine and gearbox that it retains to this day. Exported to Switzerland in 1979, it was maintained regardless of cost before returning to the UK in 1990 with a large amount of history and bills. Regularly used and maintained since, it is described by the vendor as follows:

“This car is in average to good condition and has never been over-restored. The engine is gutsy and responsive with ample torque. The paperwork suggests it has a balanced crank with high lift cams fitted. It has a gold top cylinder head possibly of Weslake free-flow design. The engine is hard to start from cold and has some light tappet /cam chain noise. Oil pressure is 20psi at idle and 80 under load.

“The gearbox is a 4-speed manual with electric overdrive. Synchromesh is limited so practice your double de-clutching, though there are no whines when driving apart from the traditional Moss box noise in first. The clutch is good but the pedal can be soft. It has non-servo disc brakes all round which work well with a pedal pump. The handbrake is good and the back axle is quiet although the rear driver’s side wheel may need bearings adjusting for play but is quiet. The suspension feels uprated and gives a very sporting ride.

“The paintwork was renewed in 2005 using the correct Jaguar Carmen Red cellulose paint and remains in good condition apart from a couple of blemishes on the boot lid. The panels are straight and rust-free though the gaps round the bonnet and the passenger door in particular could be improved. The chassis is solid with no obvious corrosion or repairs.

“The spoked wheels and chrome spinners are all in good condition with good radial tyres all round and a spare wheel and jack in the boot. The exhaust is stainless steel. The chromework is complete and generally un-dented and in good condition apart from some pitting on the boot number plate light. Chrome ancillary spot and fog lamps are fitted.

“The interior is period red leather, now well patinated, with red carpet throughout. Some instrument knobs are missing, the passenger interior door handle is loose and the window winder is inoperative. Both driver and passenger windows have sand blast marks on them. The door cards are present but loosely fitted and the steering wheel has some superficial cracks. A heater is fitted for comfort on winter jaunts.”

The car certainly performed strongly during a test drive on the occasion of our visit to take these photos, with notably flat handling and a rattle-free ride. With an MOT until June 2010 and taxed until next May, this appears to be an eminently usable and exciting sportscar at a very reasonable guide price. The icing on the cake is a very appropriate 150 number plate.

Seen on Facebook 10/21 with photos, car still in the UK and looking very good. The previous owner's son has inherited the car.
