    Auction description:
    The Spirit of Motoring
    Ascot Racecourse England
    Saturday 30th September 2006
    Lot 221 1959 Jaguar XK150S Fixedhead Coupe
    Registration no: 7844BP
    Chassis no: S824716D/N
    Estimate: £18,000-22,000

This XK150S was previously owned by the well known amateur race driver John Appleton. Appleton campaigned in various machines varying from a Riley special to a Bugatti at Brooklands. He has pre-war class wins at Shelsey Walsh hillclimb and Brooklands and still holds the Class G Mountain-circuit lap record of 76.1 mph at Brooklands. 7844 BP was his daily drive and was used extensively throughout the continent on trans European drives. Weslake reworked the cylinder head with a number of other modifications including the fitment of ventilated discs and multi piston calipers and Koni shock absorbers fitted all round. The Moss gearbox was replaced with an XJ6 all-synchromesh overdrive 'box enabling the car to cruise at 130 mph plus.

The car was featured in a road test by Jaguar World in 1994 with the author noting the car felt 'more modern and responsive than a standard XK150' and 'the gearbox was a joy.' The car has since benefited from a comprehensive rebuild completed in 2003 which included a bare metal re-spray and restorative work to the chassis and body, with a new front windscreen, stainless steel straight through pipes, new seals and 5 new tyres also fitted. The body and chassis are described by the vendor to be in excellent condition.

The car is supplied with a photographic record of the work carried out, a V5 document, old MoT's, spec sheets from RJW Appleton, magazine articles on the vehicle and a significant history file. 7844 BP is described to be in good condition overall and represents a uniquely modified XK150 with a rich and well documented history.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
