It features a modern CD player and wire wheels the car also has an alternator, Kenlowe electric cooling fan and radiator expansion tank (header tank) making it a very useable car in modern conditions.

Car to be at auction 9/23

Few cars come with as much innate class, style and charm as an XK150 DHC.

We think this is a particularly well-sorted and fettled example, and one that benefits from some sensible and sensitively executed nods to modern motoring – such as PAS, good brakes and a gearbox that wants to be used.

That it is also powerfully redolent of 1963 and the scandal that brought down Harold Macmillan's Conservative government is, of course, a bonus.

We like ‘Christine’ a great deal.

We’re confident to offer this splendid car for auction with an estimate of £65,000 - £75,000.

This car was originally supplied by Henlys of London and was first registered on 3.3.58.

We understand from a previous owner that the car was exported new to what was then Rhodesia.

In 1985 it was sold by D.K. Engineering of Watford to a Mr. Wayne T. Karchesky, who we believe was then a serving member of the United States Air Force Reserve based in Ramstein, Germany.

We think it went to live in Guernsey in 1994.

It had its first major bodywork restoration in 2000, courtesy of CHR Classic Cars, and was then bought by a man from Beverley in Yorkshire in 2008.

At this point the car had its engine, mechanicals and interior trim comprehensively rebuilt, restored and overhauled as necessary by Twyford Moors Classic Cars Ltd at a cost of over £27,000.

In 2009 it had a new 5-speed synchromesh gearbox installed by Guy Broad.

At some point, the car has acquired power-assisted steering.

The Jaguar Heritage Certificate tells us that the chassis is the original but the engine (which was originally V3096-8) has been replaced by one numbered V7539-8 at some time.

In 2014 the car upped sticks once more and set off for the verdant pastures of Market Drayton, Shropshire.

It was given a thorough inspection by Classic Motor Cars Ltd of Bridgnorth, Shropshire in 2020, and the same firm was tasked with carrying out any required remedial work.

It was bought by the vendor in May 2022.

He bought the car at least in part because it is a veritable doppelgänger for the white XK150 DHC owned by the ill-fated ‘society osteopath’ Stephen Ward, a man whose name will be forever linked with those of John Profumo, Christine Keeler, Mandy Rice-Davies and the Soviet Naval attaché, Yevgeny Ivanov.

The vendor and his wife, who live 5 minutes from Cliveden House, soon found themselves referring to the car as ‘Christine’ and have, on several occasions, driven the car to Cliveden, where it was no doubt met with fond recollection by those who have seen the film ‘Scandal’, and abject horror by any ancient ex-Astor retainers old enough to have been around at the time of the actual scandal.

It is in excellent overall condition, having been the subject of major restorations in 2000 and 2008, and having always been the happy recipient of no-expense-spared maintenance and upkeep.

It received a new battery and a service from Hofmann’s of Henley in August 2023.

The 5-digit odometer currently reads 72,074 miles.

On the occasion of its 2010 MoT, the mileage was recorded as being 67,837.

It has retained its original colour scheme of Old English White exterior, black hood and red interior.

The car drives very well indeed and benefits in no small measure from having power steering, a more modern gearbox and decent brakes.
