1959 Jaguar XK 150 Drophead Coupe
LOT: 326
Estimate: $120,000-$140,000 US
Chassis No. S837560
AUCTION RESULTS: Lot was Sold at a price of $165,000
Finished in Imperial Maroon with a tan convertible top and boot over biscuit Connolly leather, this three-owner car is the beneficiary of a total restoration completed in 2008. It was purchased new by its original owner, a dentist in San Mateo, California while the second owner hailed from nearby Napa. Its third and current owner has been its caretaker for 22 years. The car is thought to have a special-order burl walnut dash as compared to the leather-covered dash that was made standard on the 150 line. A custom leather and wood steering wheel has been fabricated to match. An alternator replaces the generator for reliability and to aid in operation of the amplified Alpine stereo which is completely hidden and removable for concours showing. All gauges were refurbished in England, including the working clock. The upholstery has been installed as original including Connolly leather, Wilton carpets and hardura. No detail has been overlooked including the original chrome beading on the convertible roof. Very few careful break-in miles have been driven since the restoration was completed. Following the completion of this meticulous restoration the car has received “Best in Class” and “Judges’ Choice” Awards in Jaguar Club of North America Concours Competition in the non-driven championship awards class.

Please note that the correct horsepower is 220. It is a SE (Special Equipment) Model.

Car to be at auction 8/14

Auction description:
Lot 245
1958 JAGUAR XK150 3.4-LITER DROPHEAD COUPE
Chassis no. S837560
Engine no. V4634-8
Without reserve
US$ 125,000 - 150,000
£73,000 - 88,000

Completed at Jaguar's Browns Lane, Coventry works in July of 1958, this exceptional XK150 was built as a top-of-the-line Drophead Coupe version and configured for the North American market as a left hand drive example. The XK150 was finished in a stealth black exterior, fitted with a red Connolly interior and a black convertible top.

Distributed through Jaguar Cars of New York, the car's first owner is believed to have been a dentist from San Mateo, California. The elegant XK150 was later purchased by a Napa, California resident, before being acquired by the third owner, who would keep the car for over two decades. This gentleman began a comprehensive restoration, during which every effort was made to make the XK150 Drophead Coupe an absolute showstopper. When the work was completed in 2008, the freshly restored Jaguar was brought out to the show circuit with great success, and was soon awarded Best in Class and Judges Choice at JCNA events. The car was sold to the fourth owner in 2009, whom kept the car until recently, proudly displaying it in his climate-controlled collection.

Finished in the period-correct Imperial Maroon over a biscuit Connolly interior and Wilton carpets, this XK150 Drophead Coupe looks incredibly elegant and appropriate. The light tan convertible top and top boot gives great contrast to the car's exterior color, while its exquisite chrome and bright work adds the right amount of pizzazz. This XK150 still retains its matching numbers engine block, but the cylinder head appears to have been replaced at some point. A great entry to rallies and driving events, this Jaguar would be equally at home on a concours lawn.

This 1958 Jaguar XK150 is a left-hand-drive Drophead Coupe that was built on July 8, 1958 and reportedly underwent a refurbishment that was completed in 2008. It is finished in maroon with a tan soft top over a tan interior and is powered by a 3.4-liter inline-six mated to a four-speed manual transmission. Additional features include wire wheels, four-wheel disc brakes, chrome bumpers with overriders, lap belts, and a wood-finished shift knob and dashboard. This XK150 DHC is now offered on dealer consignment with a clean California title.

2008 included a repaint from its original shade of black to its current maroon. Equipment includes a tan soft top, chrome bumpers with overriders, and dual exhaust outlets.

Wire wheels wear two-eared knock-off spinners and are mounted with Firestone Cavallino tires. Four-wheel Dunlop disc brakes came as standard and are servo-assisted.

The seats are upholstered in tan leather along with matching door panels and Wilton carpeting. Additional equipment includes a wood-finished dash and shift knob, lap belts, a four-spoke steering wheel on an adjustable column, and a dash-mounted rear-view mirror.

Centrally-mounted Smiths instrumentation consists of a 6k-rpm tachometer with an inset clock, a 140-mph speedometer, and gauges for fuel level, amperage, oil pressure, and water temperature. The five-digit odometer displays 419 miles, though total mileage is unknown.

The 3.4-liter XK inline-six features dual SU carburetors and was factory rated at 190 horsepower, which is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission. Engine block stamping V 4634-8 matches the number listed on the accompanying Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate. The cylinder head was replaced some time ago.

The Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate lists factory colors and identification numbers along with a manufacture date of July 8, 1958.
