Car was at RM auction 10/09

Auction description:
Lot# 225
1958 Jaguar XK 150 Fixed Head Coupé Prototype
Chassis No. XB 1001
Estimate: £45,000-£60,000

To be auctioned on
Wednesday, October 28, 2009
3.4-litre dual overhead cam inline six-cylinder engine, four-speed manual transmission, independent front suspension with coil springs, live rear axle, four-wheel disc brakes. Wheelbase: 102"

The XK 150 offered here is a very special car indeed, as it offers insight into the factory’s development of this final XK series before the introduction of the E-Type. As supported by documentation in its file, chassis XB 1001 was a factory prototype development car. A letter from the Special Facilities Office at Jaguar to the car’s owner in 1980 (Mr. ID Brawn) confirms the car was used by Jaguar’s experimental department in early 1958 and that it had additional work carried out while inside the factory. They confirmed that its engine prefix “KE” corresponded with a 3.4 Mark I saloon of the time, instead of the typical XK150 prefix of V, VS, VA or VAS. While Jaguar’s XK 150s initially received the same 3.4-litre engine as its XK 140 predecessor, this car’s special chassis number and engine number prefix confirm it was a factory experimental car.

In fact, two prior owners had also contacted Jaguar for information about its curious chassis and engine numbers, but the responses were not as knowledgeable and only scratched the surface. RW Jenkins wrote a letter in 1974 but was rather unsuccessful. Mr. J. Talbot tried again in 1978 and was told the car left the factory finished in Sherwood Green and dispatched as “Experimental Department Development Car.”

As confirmed by all the letters in the aforementioned file, after its developmental experiments at the factory, the car was sold to its first owner, the prominent racing driver Ivor Bueb who had a close relationship with the marque and had driven a Jaguar D-Type to victory at Le Mans in 1955 with Mike Hawthorn and again in 1957 with Ron Flockhart and Ecurie Ecosse. By the time he registered this car on 9th June, 1958 on number “WDU 493,” he was clearly one of Jaguar’s “blue eyed boys,” having achieved his second Le Mans victory just one year earlier. In fact, this car was pictured with this registration number on the cover of Jaguar Driver magazine in June of 1988.

Born in 1923 in South London, “Ivor the Driver” Bueb was a garage owner from Cheltenham. He was also involved in a number of other racing series, driving sports cars and also Formula 3 with occasional grand prix starts for Bernie Ecclestone’s Connaught team. In fact, in 1958, the year he acquired this car, he raced for Connaught in Formula 1 and also piloted a Lotus 12 in Formula 12. Sadly, he didn’t own XB 1001 for very long as he died from injuries he sustained in August the following year in a crash with his Cooper-Borgward.

The current owner acquired the car in the late 1990s and has maintained it in his respected private collection ever since. At the time, it had been in another private collection for about eight years and had not been run. The car remains very original throughout and, although it would benefit from recommissioning, will be an excellent car to keep in its original condition.

As a rare prototype from Jaguar’s experimental department, we encourage close inspection of the car onsite as it is certainly very unique. With the introduction of the E-Type in 1961, XB 1001 offers fascinating insight into the development work that went into Jaguar’s final and most refined XK.
Addendum
Please note that contrary to what is stated in the auction catalogue, this car has a current MOT and has just received a comprehensive service including supply and fit of new front N/S and O/S brake calipers including new caliper pistons and brake pads; supply and fit of new fuel pump, fuel filter, contact set, rotor arm, spark plugs, rev counter cable, steering rack gaiter and battery.

Reserve was not met, not sold.

Sellers description:
1958 Jaguar XK150 Development Prototype Ex Ivor Bueb (1957) For sale from Pendine, in Oxfordshire, United Kingdom £140,000

This is a very special XK 150 indeed; chassis XB 1001 was a hand built, factory prototype development car. A letter from the Special Facilities Office at Jaguar to the car's owner in 1980 confirms the XK was used by Jaguar's experimental department in early 1958 and that it had additional work carried out whilst at Browns Lane. They note that the engine number prefix "KE" shown on the Heritage Certificate corresponded with a 3.4 Mark I saloon of the time, highlighting that as a hand built pre-production prototype XB1001 didn't conform to standard production car practice.
After its developmental duties at the factory, XB1001 was sold (or perhaps given?) to its first owner, the prominent racing driver Ivor Bueb. Bueb had a close relationship with the marque having driven a Jaguar D-Type to victory at Le Mans in 1955 with Mike Hawthorn and again in 1957 with Ron Flockhart and Ecurie Ecosse. By the time he registered this car on 9th June, 1958 with the registration number WDU 493, he was one of Jaguar's go-to drivers.
This important XK150 has featured in numerous specialist publications about the marque, including A.D Clausager's Jaguar XK140/150 in Detail and Bernard Viart's authoritative tome specifically on the XK150. It also featured on the cover of Jaguar Driver magazine in June of 1988.
XB1001 entered an important private collection in the 1990s, and within the past 12 months has been the subject of extensive cosmetic and mechanical work that included a complete bare metal repaint in its original factory colour of Sherwood Green, and a re-trim in matching green leather. Completely re-chromed, with new colour coded wheels and tyres, the brakes have also been extensively overhauled and mechanically serviced throughout.
As a rare prototype from Jaguar's experimental department, this hand built pre-production car has numerous distinct details differentiating it from a production car, and would suit the collector who appreciates its unique place in the history of the Jaguar sports car.

XK 150 fhc Factory prototype.
1956/7 Jaguar XK 150 FHC. Chassis number XB 1001 is the factory prototype which was owned initially by the Works Experimental Depatment until mid 1958 when Ivor Bueb, the works driver and Le Mans winner assumed ownership. This highly significant XK has been in long term collections and has recently been bought up to superb condition. Work included a bare metal respray in the original Sherwood Green and a full retrim in suede green hide with new carpets and headlining in West of England cloth. It has been fully rechromed and has new body cloured 16" wire wheels with new Vredestein radials. A unique opportunity to acquire a slice of Jaguar history.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
