    Owner's Comments / Article Text:
1958 Jaguar XK150 Coupe - 1 Owner From New! Very rarely a 45-year-old automobile becomes available that is not only very collectible per se, but also hails straight from the custody of its original proprietor and caretaker. Having always resided in California adds another dimension of desirability; having always been kept in an immaculate state of preservation merely constitutes the icing on the cake. Cars of this caliber, with a provenance so irrefutably marvelous, are usually sold at premier live auctions like Meadowbrook or Pebble Beach. Jaguar's ultimate XK iteration is the XK 150 of 1957-61, of which exactly 9,395 units were manufactured in Roadster, Convertible, and 2+2 Coupé versions. Responding to higher demands regarding performance, spurred by the advent of competitors like Mercedes 300SL and BMW 507, the XK 150 featured the former "MC" engine at no extra cost, sporting 210hp, as well as 4-wheel DUNLOP disc brakes, cementing the car's reign as the ultimate 1950s British Gentleman's express. A combination of fortuitous events confluenced to preserve this wonderful automobile for all these years in mind-bogglingly beautiful original condition. The fact that it spent its life protected from the elements and was always religiously serviced miraculously aided in the conservation of a completely original specimen, ready to be enjoyed. The recent move by its original owner to a retirement community enables me to present the car for sale here on eBay. This regal 1958 XK 150 Grand Tourer was built for export. It was sold brand new on May 25, 1958 to Mr. Charles A. Berryessa, Esq., of Mountain View, California, as evidenced by the original Jaguar Guarantee Certificate, which is still with the car. (This works guarantee has, unfortunately, expired a long, long time ago.) After a move to Santa Cruz, the original yellow-and-black licenses plates were turned in and the black-and-yellow plates # MCL 540--still with the car to the present day--were fitted. Car was driven sparingly, on special occasions only. 70,892 miles indicated on the XK's odometer constitute the guaranteed total mileage and has been verified as such with the car's sole owner of 45 years. This XK comes with an almost unbelievable amount of documentation. There's even the original Jaguar envelope, postmarked in Coventry 2/VII 1958, containing the original letter of guarantee, listing the original owner as well. There is the original (not a reprint!) operating, maintenance and service handbook, including service vouchers and maintenance chart. Service receipts date back all the way to the early 1960s, with just two mechanics always taking care of the XK. Furthermore, we found lots of original registration cards attached to the steering wheel, like it used to be in the '50s and '60s. Even the first (5/29/1958) registration card and the DMV cash receipt (pictured above) was found inside the holder. That's true classic-car-archaeology at its finest! Obviously, the numbers on all components match the firewall-mounted data plate. Everything is original here, not just the owner! XK 150's bonnet opens alligator-style to reveal the mighty 3.4 liter DOHC 6-cylinder engine. Developing 210 horespower @ 5,200 rpm, this fascinating power plant is as close to a racing engine as you could possibly hope to get in a street-legal car of the era. This aluminum-head, dual overhead cam unit--in slightly modified form--propelled the Coventry factory's C and D-Types to five wins at the prestigious 24 hours of Le Mans during the 1950s. This example's finely tuned engine starts on the button, runs without any unusual mechanical noises (but emitting the typical, exciting Jaguar sound) and keeps excellent oil pressure. We've had a few very hot days here in Orange County recently; the Jaguar never overheated! Naturally, the overdrive functions perfectly, and the fantastic DUNLOP 4-wheeel disc brakes perform a wonderful job whenever called upon. The factory tan interior, including finest CONNOLLY leather and WILTON wool carpeting, has never been replaced, thank heavens, and shows a very impressive, irreplaceable patina. One could restore it over and over, but a car is original only once! All original dash and instuments. Large, telescoping steering wheel is still topped by the factory horn button, in remarkable condition. Even the leather covering on the dashboard is still original; it has shrunk a bit during the last 45 years, of course, but still looks gorgeous. The wool headliner looks to be very well preserved. Check out the unique sun visors! Aged like a fine wine: the superb original door paneling. The nicely upholstered rear cabin offers sufficient room for two, seems to have rarely been used. This car has always been british racing green. Highly glossy paint covers a rust and accident free body. There are no dings or dents. Underneath, there is not one ounce of non-factory undercoating evident on this pristine survivor. Only in California! All the chrome is original and in superb condition as well. There are a couple of dings on the rear bumper guards only; we might try to outsource NOS replacements or have the guards straightened and triple-plated. You are welcome to closely inspect the XK from all sides; while it is not one of the overly restored, sterile "JCNA 99.77 point" trailer queens, it provides a brand of excellence unattainable by most restored XKs: it is a genuine, documented, unrestored, low-mileage, one-owner example, in marvelous condition, ready to be enjoyed as Sir William Lyons intended, for as long as fossil fuels are available. Almost unbelievable, but this is a perfect original--not restored!--HARDURA-lined trunk compartment. A rare sight and most welcome addition to any collectible Jaguar would be the complete tool kit. Here, it is in excellent original condition and includes the Thor hammer, Garrington wrenches, and pins. A delight to the eyes of Concours judges, and a source for extra points on the scoring sheet! Of course, after four decades, the fabric tool bag is a little tatty; we have carefully wrapped it in clear plastic for protection of originality. Another area to excite the heart of every aficionado would be the clean, original, and--most importantly--rust free spare tire well. Here, the sheet metal is absolutely virginal, without even the tiniest bit of surface rust! Note the original, painted spare wheel as well as the original grease gun, jack, and handle, still fastened to the underside of the wooden spare wheel cover. This XK is 100% complete! With correct 6.00x16 wide whitewall B.F. Goodrich tires on new 16" chrome wire knock-off wheels--each featuring 60 stainless steel spokes--most favorably complementing its classic, smoothly flowing Jaguar lines, the XK 150 Coupé truly presents an awe inspiring sight. No wonder it's a favorite at car shows! Set of four original painted wire wheels with knock-offs and tires is also included. The honesty and the originality of this car is so fantastic, we could not stop inspecting each area in amazement for hours on end. It's a true reference car! Incredibly, this low-mileage XK150 still tantalizes the aficionado's nose with a hint of that exquisite new car smell, 1958 Jaguar vintage. If you are looking for great, superbly preserved piece of history - this is it! Stunning in looks and performance, the XK150 3.4-liter Coupé is a true icon of the mid-century high performance Gran Turisme scene. With a top speed beyond 120mph and acceleration times of less than 10 seconds from 0-60, 4-wheel DUNLOP disc brakes, and its floor-shifted 4-speed synchromesh transmission with overdrive, it is exhilarating to drive and simultaneously provides utter comfort on long trips. The ideal car for Vintage Rallying, to be sure. This one is fully eligible to participate in all major events. Satisfaction is guaranteed; please, bid with confidence.

The Fixed Head Coupe offered here is documented by its Jaguar Daimler Heritage Certificate, a copy of which is on file, as having been sold new on October 18, 1957, to Charles Berryessa, of Mountain View, California. It was built with the 3.4-liter engine and four-speed manual gearbox with overdrive and was originally finished in traditional British Racing Green with a tan interior. The car was acquired directly from the Berryessa family by its present owner, and it has had only two caretakers from new. It remains wonderfully original, extending to its original factory paint, interior, and complete matching-numbers drivetrain, and all of its features are lovingly patinated, with just enough wear to add character. Overall, the car would still present beautifully at a local show, as its present owner has sorted it carefully and it runs and drives well, with just 72,748 original miles on its odometer.

Most Jaguar XK150s are beautiful concours queens or worn-down drivers. In between is this wonderful, well-preserved survivor, which is just as suitable for display at Jaguar concours, where its original details are sure to be a hit, as it is for simply driving on a wide-open highway.
