Dispatched to Gilman’s of Hong Kong on 19 May 1954, first owner was Mr H. E. Turner of Kaitak Airport, Hong Kong. No further HK owners are known. Around 1975 it was shipped to Parkland Autos, Perth, Western Australia where it was owned by John Royayne, John Whiteford and Tom Williams, an engineer by trade, who did a superb job of restoring to the current state. David Tack shipped it back to Britain. In May 1999 Freemantle to Singapore on vessel “Ever Ally” and on to Thamesport, UK and finally Thamesport to Stanstead for Customs clearance.

In 1999 Motor Show at Earl’s Court, the last owner fell in love and the transaction was completed 8th November 1999. It lived there in South Oxfordshire until 2021 when they moved to York.

    Chassis 669160

    Engine F2653-8

    Maintenance points of note

Since 1999 it has been garaged in a well-maintained environment. Once grit goes on the roads it has been locked away for the winter. Regular servicing, general maintenance and repairs have taken place as you will see from the lever-arch file. Chassis, engine block and gearbox numbers all match. At some point the cylinder head has been changed like for like. This XK120 is fitted with an original style Moss box. There is no synchromesh between 1st and 2nd. Last owner does not double declutch; just let the revs drop a little and I pull the gear stick slowly through the gate – this technique has served well for 30, 000 miles. The two significant additions to make this a great car to drive even in modern traffic conditions are: Coopercraft disk brakes on the front

Kenlowe electric fan (with a radiator replacement in 2019)

The engine was rebuilt by Brian Stevens of XK Motorsport in 2010. Brian also did a full bare metal respray in 2018/ 19 which included replacing quarter wings on both sides and work around the rear quarterlights. Plus, other work and a service. Carb rebuild and sundries by Pool Lane Classics in September 2021. The head gasket blew in June 2022 so the head was skimmed and rebuilt also by Pool Lane Classics. A donor gearbox sourced from Ken Jenkins (Technical Director of the Jaguar Enthusiasts’ Club) was used when 1st gear lost a tooth in 2024. A full gearbox rebuild was undertaken along with a new clutch. Carbs and timing tuned by A. G. Classic Car Tuning in June 2024. It was a marked improvement in running and performance and still is to this day. A rear half-shaft had a clean brake in July 2026. Ken Jenkin replaced the broken part and fettled the whole rear drive mechanism along with completing a full service. Batteries, It has the original set up of 2 * 6V batteries in series behind the seats. There is an isolation switch between the two batteries. One battery was replaced in 2026 with the second showing excellent condition at that point.

    Summary (last owner)

It is a lovely car to drive. If you think it looks good, then it drives and sounds even better.

The boot is surprisingly large albeit in a flat plain. Don’t forget the compartment behind the seats.

Looking down the bonnet is a dream. I hope you enjoy the whole experience even half as much as we did.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
