Car returns to auction 5/24

Auction description:

Collector Car & Number Plate Auction 19/05/2024

Chassis number: T820032DN

Engine number: VS1890-9

The ultimate development of Jaguar’s XK-series, which began with the XK120 of 1948, was the 1958 Jaguar XK150 S, exemplified by this March 1959-built Roadster OTS.

Sold originally by Hull (UK) dealers Green Harrow, this 3.4 S left the factory finished in Speedwell Blue with a Grey interior but today is presented in red with tan trim.

This is one of only 92 XK150 3.4 S roadsters (or OTS in factory lingo) manufactured in right-hand drive. In addition, the mechanical (rather than electric) overdrive operated by a lever forward of the gear stick was believed to have only been fitted to 34 cars, making this a rare and even more collectible example.

In its current ownership since 2006, this XK150 S was undergoing a restoration when it sustained damage during 2011’s dreadful Brisbane floods while in storage at an offsite location, resulting in work starting again and a total restoration to the condition you see today.

Now part of a diverse collection of important British cars, this open-top Jaguar has travelled less than 400 miles in its current ownership, which is reflected in its current condition.

Indicating 68,601 miles, the XK150 comes with a Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate and a history file with receipts.

Really, there is nothing to do but enjoy this ultimate ‘50s Jaguar sports car.

Sold originally by Hull (UK) dealers Green Harrow, this 3.4 S left the factory on the 3rd of April, 1959 finished in the special order colour of Speedwell Blue with a Grey interior and a black convertible top. The car bore the first registration mark 3838KH which was issued in Kingston-upon-Hull. This is important information as this allows the car to be exported back to the UK VAT free should anyone ever wish to do so. In addition, this car was fitted with mechanical (rather than electric) overdrive operated by a lever forward of the gear stick was believed to have only been fitted to 34 cars, making this a rare and even more collectible example. Every number on the car is matching to the vehicle identification plate and are all confirmed by the accompanying Jaguar Heritage Trust trace certificate. The car was totally restored in 2006 and the owner chose the beautiful colour combination of carmen red and grey interior. Every component of the car was restored and since completion was used very sparingly having travelled a mere 150 miles. Upon arrival at Concours Sportscar Restoration in 2025, we completed our most thorough of inspections and reports and noted recommissioning was required along with the recommendation that certain minor incorrect items be rectified to complete the car to the condition that it deserved. The convertible top frame was restored and a new convertible top fitted by the boys at Stitched Up Custom Trim. A new big bore stainless steel exhaust system was fitted, the engine fully serviced and then tuned on the chassis dyno. The entire cooling system refurbished, brakes serviced and new correct 16×5 chrome wire wheels fitted to new 185VR16 Pirelli Cinturato tyres. Then over 100 miles of testing was performed until the car was ready for listing. Suffice to say the rare cat performs beautifully. The extra power and torque that the “S” engine delivers is certainly noticeable over the more common standard XK150 and this particular example benefits from an extra 10 rear wheel horsepower thanks to the big bore exhaust and being tuned to perfection. The ride, braking ability and handling are all as expected from a well restored XK150, but this one maybe a little crisper due to the quality Pirelli radial tyres. A testimate to the rarity and condition of the car, she was accepted as one of only 50 entrants in the 2025 Noosa Concours d’elegance held on the 19th of July. Gaining entry to this prestigious event is very difficult and an achievement in itself!

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
