Auction description:
Hampson Auctions - Tattenhall, UK, 8 March, 2026
Lot 54
1958 Jaguar XK150S 3.4-Litre Roadster
***NO RESERVE*** The one everyone wants, highly desirable and presented with its marque-relevant cherished registration number
Registration – XKJ 150S
Chassis – T 831228 DN
M.O.T. – Exempt
Odometer – 8890
Chassis T 831228 DN was manufactured on 29th August 1958 and is accompanied by a Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate confirming that it was dispatched to the original supplying dealer, Jaguar Cars New York, on 12th September 1958. The Certificate records engine number VS 1361 9, body number F 16227 and a manual gearbox with overdrive, providing reassuring confirmation of its original specification. Having spent part of its life abroad, the car returned to UK soil in 1992 and has since benefitted from a comprehensive restoration, during which it was converted to right hand drive configuration. As part of this programme of works, a bespoke luggage compartment was crafted within the boot, enhancing both practicality and presentation. We are advised that the car has been in current ownership for some 24 years, reflecting a notably long and committed custodianship. Presented in an elegant deep maroon hue complemented by wire wheels and a matching interior, the car exudes the muscular yet refined character for which the XK150S is rightly celebrated. The history file includes Heritage documentation and period literature, underlining its authenticity and appeal.
The XK150 marked the final chapter of Jaguar’s seminal XK series that began with the XK120 in 1948. Introduced in 1957, the 150 featured a wider body, one piece windscreen and improved interior comfort, while the ‘S’ variant elevated performance still further through the fitment of a straight port cylinder head and triple SU carburettors, increasing output to a quoted 250bhp. Combined with four wheel Dunlop disc brakes, the XK150S offered performance and stopping power that placed it firmly at the forefront of late 1950s sports car engineering. Today, genuine ‘S’ specification Roadsters are among the most coveted of all XK derivatives.
The accompanying cherished registration ‘XKJ 150S’ is perfectly aligned with the model designation and represents a highly desirable addition in its own right, further enhancing the car’s presence and individuality.

Rarest of the rare. The 3.4S, 250bhp XK150 roadster is super super rare. In my view these are the ultimate grand touring sports car in the XK range. I’d go as far as to say this is the best all around sports car of the entire 1950’s. A bold claim maybe, however the visually stunning and rakish 150ots really is an eyeful of sleek lines adorned by glorious chrome. It is a stunning thing. With the hood up the car looks as good as it does when neatly stowed away.
According to the Jaguar Heritage Certificate this car was manufactured on the 29th August 1958 and despatched to Jaguar Cars New York on the 12th of September. There is some history from its time in the USA but relevant to now is the car returning to the UK on the 20th April 1988 with taxes paid and receipted on the accompanying HMRC Customs and Excise Import documents
Today the car is a matching numbers car and a full body off chassis nut and bolt concours restoration including conversion to right hand drive was undertaken under the instruction of owner Mr Paul West of Seaford Sussex. The work performed by Charles Robinson Classic Cars of Basingstoke and the exhaustive restoration work is documented in a 2 page letter from Mr Robinson to Mr West on file dated 12th October 1988. That restoration is the car we see today some 8895 miles and 38 years later. The restoration and subsequent owners have clearly cherished the car because it presents very nicely today.
The 150S was registered for the road and issued with a personal number plate XKJ150S. The relevance of that number doesn’t need explaining. The documentation supporting the plate allocation is noted on the file too.
Mr West sold the car at a Brooks Goodwood Festival of Speed auction on the 18th June 1994 to the most recent owner Geroge Edwards of St Helens who kept the car as part of a small car and motor cycle collection for over 30years. Described in the 1994 auction catalogue as ‘concours’ and noted as such by XK Historian David Bentley chassis number T831228DN sold for £38k plus premium back in 1994. Now the car is looking for a new custodian to use enjoy and care for this fantastic car.
The car today remains a really outstanding car and whilst there is little history it is clear the car has been well looked after. Bodily very sound with excellent door gaps and very straight panels it is clear to see the restoration back in the late 1980’s was done to an exhaustive standard.
